DPF Cleaning & DPF Solutions
Professional Mobile DPF Cleaning Across Hartlepool, Teesside & the North East
A blocked Diesel Particulate Filter can cause loss of power, limp mode, warning lights, poor fuel economy and regeneration problems. Left unresolved, excessive DPF restriction can place additional stress on the engine and associated components and potentially lead to a much larger repair bill.
GC Tuning provides professional DPF diagnostics and chemical cleaning for diesel cars and vans throughout Hartlepool, Teesside and the North East.
Our aim isn't simply to clear a warning light. We assess what's happening with the DPF, check the relevant live data and determine whether cleaning is appropriate.
What Does a DPF Do?
A Diesel Particulate Filter forms part of a modern diesel vehicle's emissions-control system. Its job is to capture soot particles from the exhaust rather than allowing them to be released directly into the atmosphere.
As soot accumulates, the vehicle periodically performs a process called DPF regeneration, raising exhaust temperature to burn accumulated soot.
Problems arise when regeneration cannot take place successfully or the filter becomes excessively restricted.
Signs of a Blocked DPF
Common symptoms include:
✓ DPF warning light
✓ Engine-management light
✓ Reduced power or limp mode
✓ Frequent regeneration attempts
✓ Increased fuel consumption
✓ Poor acceleration
✓ Cooling fans running frequently
✓ High DPF differential pressure
✓ Excessive soot loading
✓ Regeneration failing or being inhibited
Ignoring these symptoms can allow the problem to become progressively worse.
Why Do DPFs Become Blocked?
A DPF blockage isn't always simply caused by the filter itself.
Frequent short journeys and interrupted regenerations can contribute to soot accumulation, but underlying engine faults can also cause or accelerate DPF problems.
Depending on the vehicle, potential causes can include pressure-sensor problems, temperature-sensor faults, EGR issues, boost or air-flow problems, injector issues and other engine-management faults.
That's why diagnosis is important. Cleaning a DPF without considering why it became blocked can result in the same problem returning.
Professional DPF Chemical Cleaning
Where the DPF is suitable for cleaning, GC Tuning provides a professional chemical cleaning service designed to break down and remove accumulated contamination and restore exhaust flow.
We can compare relevant readings before and after the cleaning process to establish whether restriction has been successfully reduced.
We've seen vehicles arrive with extremely high differential-pressure and soot readings and leave with dramatically improved figures after successful cleaning.
The result can be:
✓ Reduced DPF restriction
✓ Improved exhaust flow
✓ Reduced differential pressure
✓ Restored engine performance
✓ Improved regeneration capability where appropriate
✓ Potentially avoiding the cost of DPF replacement
Cleaning Can Save You a Significant Repair Bill
A replacement DPF can be expensive, particularly on modern diesel cars and commercial vehicles.
If the existing filter is serviceable and the problem can be resolved through professional cleaning, DPF cleaning can represent a substantial saving compared with replacing the complete filter assembly.
We won't tell you that every DPF can be saved. A physically damaged, cracked, melted or otherwise failed filter may require replacement.
The objective is to determine the most sensible solution for the vehicle rather than unnecessarily replacing expensive components.
DPF Cleaning vs Forced Regeneration
A forced regeneration and a DPF clean are not the same thing.
A forced regeneration attempts to increase exhaust temperature so the vehicle can burn accumulated soot. On a severely restricted DPF or a vehicle with underlying faults, forcing regeneration may not be appropriate.
Our approach is based on the condition of the vehicle, fault codes, soot loading and relevant DPF data rather than automatically initiating a regeneration.
DPF & EGR Fault Diagnosis
DPF problems can sometimes occur alongside EGR and other engine-management faults.
We'll assess the faults present and advise on the appropriate solution.
Simply clearing diagnostic trouble codes doesn't repair a blocked DPF or correct the underlying reason the vehicle is struggling to regenerate.
DPF Software Solutions
We can also provide ECU software services for vehicles where emissions-system modifications are appropriate for their intended use.
Where DPF software modification is requested, GC Tuning will not disable the DPF in the ECU while the filter remains physically installed in the exhaust system. Any such work must be coordinated with the appropriate physical work.
Important Legal Information
A DPF is an emissions-control device. Removing or disabling emissions-control equipment on a vehicle used on public roads can make the vehicle unlawful for road use and may result in an MOT failure, as well as potentially affecting insurance, warranty or type approval.
For normal road-going vehicles, our DPF diagnostic and cleaning service is designed to restore the emissions system to correct operation wherever possible.

ECU Remapping & Stage 1 Tuning
Professional Mobile ECU Tuning Across Hartlepool, Teesside & the North East
GC Tuning & Performance provides professional ECU remapping and Stage 1 tuning for cars and vans throughout Hartlepool, Teesside and the wider North East.
ECU remapping is the process of recalibrating the software within your vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU controls many aspects of how the engine operates, including power delivery, torque, boost pressure, fuelling and throttle response.
Manufacturers often use different software calibrations across similar engines and vehicles. Professional ECU tuning allows the calibration to be optimised for the individual vehicle, providing improvements in performance and drivability without physically modifying the engine.
What Is a Stage 1 Remap?
A Stage 1 remap is designed for a standard or largely standard vehicle and normally requires no additional performance hardware.
The original ECU software is read from the vehicle and a professionally developed calibration is installed, optimising the relevant engine parameters within appropriate operating limits.
Depending on the vehicle, a Stage 1 remap can provide:
✓ Increased BHP
✓ Increased torque
✓ Stronger acceleration
✓ Improved throttle response
✓ Smoother power delivery
✓ Improved overtaking performance
✓ Better towing performance on suitable vehicles
The exact improvement varies considerably between engines, gearboxes and ECU types, which is why we provide expected figures for each individual vehicle rather than advertising one generic percentage increase.
Is ECU Remapping Safe?
When carried out correctly on a mechanically healthy vehicle, a professionally developed Stage 1 calibration is designed to operate within sensible parameters.
At GC Tuning, we're not interested in chasing unrealistic headline figures. The aim is to provide a strong, smooth and reliable calibration appropriate for the vehicle.
The age, mileage, engine, gearbox, condition and intended use of the vehicle all need to be considered.
A remap cannot repair an underlying mechanical problem. If a vehicle has significant faults or isn't suitable for tuning, these should be addressed before performance software is installed.
Will I Notice the Difference?
On many turbocharged petrol and diesel vehicles, the difference can be significant.
It's not simply about achieving a higher peak BHP figure. Increased torque through the usable RPM range can make the vehicle feel much more responsive during normal driving.
Customers commonly notice stronger acceleration, improved mid-range performance, reduced hesitation and less need to change gear when accelerating or climbing hills.
For vans, 4x4s and towing vehicles, additional usable torque can be particularly beneficial.
Can Remapping Improve Fuel Economy?
In some circumstances, improved torque and engine efficiency can allow a vehicle to be driven with less throttle during normal driving.
However, we don't promise fuel savings. Actual fuel consumption depends heavily on driving style, journey type, vehicle condition, load and how the additional performance is used.
If you regularly use the extra power after tuning, fuel consumption may increase rather than decrease.
Petrol & Diesel ECU Tuning
We provide ECU tuning for a wide range of turbocharged petrol and diesel cars and vans.
Modern vehicles use many different ECU types and communication methods. Depending on the vehicle, programming may be carried out through the diagnostic port (OBD), directly at the ECU or using specialist programming methods.
GC Tuning uses professional ECU programming equipment and will determine the appropriate method for your particular vehicle.
Automatic & DSG Gearbox Tuning
On certain vehicles, the transmission control unit can also be calibrated.
DSG/TCU tuning can complement an engine remap by altering parameters such as torque limits, shift behaviour and gearbox response where supported.
We'll advise whether gearbox software is available or beneficial for your particular vehicle.
What Happens During a Remap?
Before tuning, we'll establish the vehicle specification and carry out the appropriate checks.
The ECU software is then read using professional tuning equipment. The calibration is prepared for the specific engine and ECU before being programmed back to the vehicle.
Following programming, the vehicle is checked to ensure everything is operating correctly.
Because different vehicles and ECUs require different programming procedures, the time required can vary.
Vehicle-Specific Tuning
We don't believe that tuning should simply be about installing the most aggressive file possible.
Different vehicles can have different engines, ECU software versions, transmissions and operating requirements even when the model appears identical.
Our approach is therefore based around appropriate vehicle-specific calibration and realistic performance gains.
How Much Power Will My Vehicle Gain?
This depends entirely on the vehicle.
Some engines have considerable tuning potential, while others have much smaller gains available.
That's why we've added our Vehicle Gains facility to the GC Tuning website. Select your vehicle to see the approximate original BHP and torque figures alongside the expected tuned figures.
Performance figures are estimates and individual results can vary according to vehicle specification and condition.
Mobile ECU Remapping
GC Tuning provides a fully mobile tuning service, allowing many vehicles to be remapped at your home, workplace or another suitable location.
We cover Hartlepool, Teesside and surrounding areas across the North East, with wider-area appointments available depending on location.
